Explore engineering at CU Denver

We offer eight broad-based undergraduate programs and 13 graduate programs, all designed to meet current industry and societal needs. Strengths include small classes with engaged faculty, abundant research and hands-on learning opportunities, and innovative and collaborative learning environments.

Bioengineering

Bioengineers improve human health by applying the science and technology of engineering to clinical problems in medicine. If you are interested in working at the interface of life sciences, engineering and clinical medicine while advancing scientific discovery, this program is for you.

Civil engineering

A degree in civil engineering opens the door to careers in areas including transportation and highways, hydrology and wastewater systems, structures and bridges, environmental and sustainability issues and geotechnical and earth design.

Computer science

The computer scientist is a professional who must be prepared to apply their skills, knowledge and creativity in a rapidly changing field. A degree in computer science at CU Denver emphasizes fundamental concepts and basic principles with a long productive life.

Electrical engineering

The electrical engineering program at CU Denver has an interdisciplinary focus, preparing our graduates to become productive engineers ready advance their careers on different professional tracks in the engineering industry.

Mechanical engineering

If hands-on design interests you, you will find mechanical engineering to be a broad field—one that covers numerous industries including automotive, appliance, biomechanical, chemical and material processing, energy, computers, electronics and aerospace.

The College of Engineering, Design and Computing offers four minors.

Computer Engineering

The minor in computer engineering provides an opportunity to gain a more in-depth knowledge of computing technology, programming digital hardware, interfacing digital hardware, internet of things, microcontrollers and microprocessors, sensor technology, as well as computer vision and image processing.

Computer Science

The minor in computer science is designed to provide undergraduate students the fundamentals of computer science and programming, skills that can enhance most any career field.

Construction Management

The minor in construction management allows students to learn skills to facilitate entry into the construction industry and is designed for students in engineering, architecture, business and other related disciplines.

Electrical Engineering

The minor in electrical engineering gives students the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of electrical engineering as well as be introduced to some advanced applications. Students are exposed to real-world applications and hands-on engineering design experiences.

 

Bioengineering

A design-based focus permeates every aspect of our training philosophy which can be summarized by the following question: what does the user want and how can I utilize my bioengineering training to achieve this need? Our academic instruction focuses on developing core competencies in life sciences, quantitative methods, technology, and research methods.

Graduate students approach civil engineering from a specialized viewpoint, choosing from the following areas: construction engineering and management; environmental and sustainability engineering; geomatics and geographic information systems; geotechnical engineering; hydrology and hydraulics; structural engineering; sustainable infrastructure; and transportation engineering.

Computer Science

Graduate programs in computer science cover key concepts of the field and offers flexibility to specialize in various areas of interest. The PhD in computer science and information systems provides research training and the PhD in engineering and applied science is an interdisciplinary degree.

Electrical Engineering

Students pursuing graduate study in electrical engineering may choose from six areas of concentration: controls and signal processing; microelectronics and VSLI; fields, waves and optics; computer engineering and embedded design; and energy and power systems.

Mechanical Engineering

Graduate study in mechanical engineering offers various program tracks, including general mechanical engineering, biomechanics, mechanics, sports engineering and thermal sciences.

Engineering and Applied Science PhD

The Engineering and Applied Science Doctor of Philosophy program consists of studies in engineering and engineering-related disciplines. It is a multidisciplinary program in keeping with the interdisciplinary nature of modern research.

Construction Project Management

The construction project management certificate is a four-course graduate certificate designed to build skills and teach critical management tools and techniques that enable individuals and teams to run projects within schedule, budget and quality requirements.

Cybersecurity and Defense

The graduate certificate in cybersecurity and defense prepares computer science professionals to identify, analyze and mitigate technical cybersecurity-related vulnerabilities, exploits and attacks against network and critical cyber infrastructure.

Environmental Stewardship for Indigenous Lands

The environmental stewardship of indigenous lands undergraduate certificate is a first-of-its-kind program, providing science, technology, engineering and mathematics students with extracurricular training in cross-cultural communication and internships with tribal and government partners

Geographic Information Systems

The graduate certificate in geographic information systems is comprised of four core GIS classes as well as any required prerequisites for those individual classes are also required. Students must also have already earned a baccalaureate degree.

Integrated Construction, Management and Leadership

The integrated construction, management and leadership graduate certificate is an interdisciplinary program designed for working or aspiring professionals and upper-level students interested in expanding their knowledge-base in the fields of engineering, architecture, business, and their intersections.

Modern Energy and Power Systems

The Energy and Power Systems graduate certificate is designed to provide students with a familiarity of modern power systems. Topics include wind and solar generation, generator types, characterization of wind and solar sites, and techniques used in the design of wind and solar power plants.

RF and Antenna Engineering

The RF Antenna Engineering graduate certificate is designed to provide students familiarity with mathematical descriptions and intuition for plane wave and non-plane wave propagation solutions. Topics covered include antenna operation, parameters and limitations including arrays; RF circuits; familiarity with EM simulation approaches and their limitations; and familiarity with measurement equipment.

Software Engineering

The graduate certificate in software engineering is designed for working professionals or computer science students beginning careers in the fields of software engineering and software development. This certificate requires a previous computer science or systems engineering degree. Students are expected to have a strong understanding of software development in terms of software construction, software coding and basic software design.
