The University of Colorado Denver Department of Bioengineering is the first of its kind in Colorado. As a dual-campus program, shared between CU Denver and the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, the program provides unprecedented instructional resources in bioengineering and research opportunities in health sciences. Students have opportunities to interact with clinicians and engineers and to perform research or medical device design in world-class hospitals and clinical research labs.

Within two days of being asked to launch a testing site for face shields by the state’s newly formed Innovation Response Team Task Force, CU Bioengineering Distinguished Professor Robin Shandas and nearly 200 volunteer researchers and students stood ready. After assessing equipment, planning a process, and choosing three labs in the Bioscience 2 Building, the team (largely working together virtually) garnered university approval. “That all happened very quickly,” said Shandas, director of the Center for Bioengineering on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. “Within 20 hours, we had our first design for testing.”
In March 2019, Keith Neeves joined the Department of Bioengineering as professor and director of new initiatives, bringing with him a reputable lab, an extensive research portfolio and unprecedented enthusiasm. “Professor Neeves has established himself as a fantastic teacher and a global leader in research,” says Dean Martin Dunn. Prior to CU Denver he was faculty at Colorado School of Mines.
