Pre-engineering program

Pre-engineering provides a structured pathway of coursework and academic advising to prepare students for transfer into the engineering major of their choice.

What is pre-engineering?

The pre-engineering program is designed to facilitate the successful transition of qualified students into an engineering major. The program provides a structured pathway of course work combined with academic advising to prepare students to enter the engineering major of their choice.

Pre-engineering students take core curriculum, math, science and engineering courses to prepare them for transfer into an engineering major. Pre-engineering students may transfer into an engineering program once they have completed the required coursework and meet the admissions requirements for pre-engineering students (see admissions requirements).  Pre-engineering students are assigned a dedicated academic advisor who will assist them with everything they need to complete pre-engineering requirements and transition into an engineering major.

I applied to an engineering major.  Why was I admitted to pre-engineering?

Students who have applied for admission to an engineering major, but do not meet the criteria for direct admission to that major, are admitted into the pre-engineering program with an engineering major interest.

I applied to an engineering major.  Why was I admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as an undeclared student?

Students who do not meet the criteria for direct admission to an engineering major or pre-engineering, but otherwise meet the university’s admission criteria, will be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) as an undeclared major.

Students admitted to CLAS-Undeclared may still pursue an engineering major by successfully completing the appropriate math and science courses. If you are interested in speaking with an advisor about your specific path to an engineering major, please schedule an appointment.
