Construction Management Minor

Construction management involves the design, planning and management of the construction, maintenance and disposal of the built environment. This includes buildings, transportation systems, utilities and commercial, industrial, residential and environmental projects. Examples include highways, bridges, airports, buildings, dams, reservoirs, light and high-speed rail systems, hospitals, laboratories, residential communities, utilities and environmental restoration projects.

The minor in construction management allows students to learn skills to facilitate entry into the construction industry and is designed for students in engineering, architecture, business and other related disciplines.

Four courses are required for the minor:

  • CVEN 2212 - Engineering Surveying: an introduction to surveying which is the technique of determining the 3D positions of points and distances and angles between them. Semester Hours: 2 or 3
  • CVEN 4230 - Construction Engineering Systems: Introduction to construction management and building systems. Semester Hours: 3; Prerequisite: junior standing
  • CVEN 4231/5231 - Construction Methods and Materials: Information regarding the primary materials and methods used to design and construct buildings including concrete, wood and steel. Semester hours: 3; Prerequisite: junior standing
  • CVEN 4232/5232 - Construction Planning and Controls: Introduction to scheduling, planning and controlling of construction projects. Semester hours: 3; Prerequisite: junior standing
  • NOTE: One of the following courses can be substituted for CVEN 4231 or CVEN 4232. All are 3 semester hours and require junior standing.

    • CVEN 5233 - Construction Cost Estimating
    • CVEN 5234 - Sustainable Construction
    • CVEN 5240 - Building Information Modeling
    • CVEN 5242 - Construction Safety
    • MGMT/ISMG 4900 – Project Management Practice

The construction management minor is designed for CU Denver undergraduates who want to grow their skills and expertise in the fields of construction and engineering. The curriculum has been developed with the encouragement and review of a team of industry professionals.

To enroll in the construction management minor, complete a Minor Declaration form.

All courses must be taken in residence CU Denver (no transfer hours). A minimum 2.0 GPA is required for courses applied to this minor with no individual course grade below C- (1.7).
