Civil Engineering Master of Science

The master of science in civil engineering at CU Denver is intended for students who have previously earned an undergraduate degree in engineering. Our graduate programs are designed for working professionals and offer ample opportunities for hands-on research.

Students choose to focus on one of the following areas of expertise:

  • Construction Engineering and Management
  • Geomatics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Hydrologic, Environmental, and Sustainability Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering

    Degree requirements

    The master of science in civil engineering requires 30 credit hours of coursework. Students choose one of two plans to complete their degree.

    P​lan 1: Master’s Thesis

    This plan requires that students complete 24 credit hours of courses and 6 credit hours of master’s thesis work. Students should develop a curriculum plan of courses to take with their thesis advisor’s guidance.

    Plan 2: Master’s Report

    This plan requires 27 credit hours of courses and 3 credit hours of master’s report work. Students should develop a curriculum plan of courses to take with their thesis advisor’s guidance.

    Prerequisite Coursework

    All graduate students are expected to have completed the prerequisite requirements relevant to their specialization within civil engineering. These requirements are in addition to the coursework required for the graduate degree. Missing prerequisites may be resolved by taking an equivalent course at CU Denver, or an equivalent institution, or by submitting documentation of equivalent coursework to the student’s academic advisor after admission.
