Dual MD/MS Degree in Biomedical Engineering

The MD/MS in Biomedical Engineering is a 5-year dual-degree program offered jointly by the School of Medicine and the Department of Bioengineering at CU Anschutz. Designed for students interested in both patient care and technological innovation, the program requires just 15 additional credits beyond the MD curriculum and can be completed as either a coursework-only or thesis-based MS.

This training equips future physicians with the ability to understand, evaluate, and help develop medical devices, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Graduates are uniquely positioned to identify unmet clinical needs and contribute to engineering solutions that improve patient outcomes. This integration of knowledge fosters an analytical and systems-oriented mindset, enabling practitioners to bridge the gap between medicine and technology in ways that traditional medical training alone may not support.

The dual degree also expands career opportunities across academia, industry, and healthcare leadership. It can strengthen competitiveness for research funding and residencies/fellowships while preparing physician-engineers to drive innovation and advance the future of medicine.
