A workshop is a planned presentation with an educational lesson and hands on activity. BEEP is essentially an outreach initiative for inclusive STEAMM education. This means that in addition to teaching core STEAMM topics and relating them to bioengineering with a fun activity, we design our workshops to examine aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially around identity, power, privilege, and oppressive behavior, to ultimately 1. encourage teens to pursue a STEAMM career and 2. to help students develop themselves as reflective, inclusive scientists.
As shown in the workflow diagram below, we work with teachers and their students to select a workshop that aligns with their curriculum, schedule a time during a class or after school program for us to come in, and then before we go in, we make sure the team of facilitators are trained on the lesson and are fully prepared to go into the school and deliver the workshop effectively.
