Emily Gibson, PhD

Assistant Professor - Bioengineering

My research and education interests include:

  • Optical Microscopy
  • Spectroscopy

Optical microscopy is an area of research focus in my lab. Optical microscopy, in particular fluorescence microscopy, has advanced to a level that allows unprecedented study of biological processes in real-time on the single molecule level. My lab is working on a project to build a Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) Microscope in order to obtain fluorescent samples at 40-50 nm in resolution as compared to the 200 nm diffraction limit.  With this work, we hope to understand protein-protein interactions.  Spectroscopy is also a focus in my lab.  We use a Raman spectral imager to obtain lipid level information in particular cell and tissue samples for cancer.
