4+1 programs: Civil Engineering BS/MS

The 4+1 programs in civil engineering provides high-performing and motivated undergraduate students the opportunity to begin graduate work at the master’s level while completing the undergraduate degree in civil engineering. This accelerates the time to obtain a graduate degree for the student, saving both time and expense.

Why consider a master’s degree:

  • Gain top-notch training in your chosen specialty within civil engineering
  • Become an expert in your chosen thesis (or report) research
  • Position yourself in a competitive employment market
  • Earn 9-13% more than those with only a bachelor of science in civil engineering

For these and other reasons, the American Society of Civil Engineers recommends all civil engineers earn their master of science degree.

Program Overview

Students enrolled in a civil engineering 4 + 1 program are allowed to apply up to 6 credit hours of 5000-level civil engineering courses, taken as technical electives, to both their bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and their master of science degree in civil engineering. Students interested in this option are strongly encouraged to meet with an advisor early in their bachelor of science program for additional information.

Students may choose from the following six research options for the 4+1 program.

Construction engineering and management

A master's degree in construction engineering and management provides the necessary decision-making skills to support complex construction projects and subsequent management throughout their useful life. Learn more.

Hydrology, environmental, and sustainability engineering

The graduate track in hydrologic, environmental, and sustainability engineering brings together the hydrologic cycle, environmental processes, and sustainability—the powerful notion that everything we engineer should support economic prosperity, environmental health, and social justice. Learn more.

Geotechnical engineering

The master of science in geotechnical engineering offers opportunities for study and research in design and construction of structures built on, in or of natural/improved soils or rocks. This specialty area allows professionals to have close association with field work and is excellent for students who love to work in and with the nature. Learn more.

Structural engineering

The master of science in structural engineering prepares individuals for a successful career in major aspects of structures such as buildings and bridges, including analysis and design. The program offers a curriculum that fits into professional and academic objectives. Learn more.

Transportation engineering

The master of science in transportation places an emphasis for courses and research on transportation engineering, planning, operations and management. We develop and investigate new methods and technologies to analyze the performance and safety of alternative transportation operations and designs. Learn more.
