This area of interest targets the development of high energy density cathodes which surpass the energy density of state-of-the art nickel cathodes. The primary objective of this FOA topic is to develop high energy density battery cells containing metal chalcogenide, oxide, or halide cathodes by solving key challenges for the cathode, electrolyte, electrode integrity, or safety. The proposed developed material should strive to show improvements in cycling stability, reducing overpotentials, rate limitations, improving mechanical integrity of electrodes, or improving material stability (i.e. gassing or thermal runaway). There are five topic areas of interest:
Cost sharing of 20-30% is required except for institutions of higher education submitting to topic areas 2 and 5; cost sharing is waived in these instances.
